Looking into hiring a skip bin but still questioning the price? If you live in Balwyn, Box Hill, Camberwell, Doncaster, Hawthorn, Ringwood, or somewhere else in Melbourne’s Eastern suburbs, we’re here to shed some light on how much it’s all likely to cost.
From hiring costs to skip bin sizes, we’ll cover everything you need to know.
The Benefits of Hiring a Skip Bin
Skip bins are a fantastic way to both organise and safely dispose of a range of different items.
Some of the most notable benefits are:
Convenient waste removal: Everything goes into one place, rather than making repeated trips to the tip.
Saves time: A skip sitting at your property means you can clear rubbish as you work.
Handles bulky items: Furniture, garden waste, timber and other large items are much easier to manage.
Keeps the area organised: Having a dedicated place for rubbish helps prevent waste from piling up around the property.
Safer clean-ups: Getting waste off the ground and into a suitable bin reduces trip hazards and scattered debris.
Different sizes available: You can choose a bin that suits the amount and type of waste you have.
Less hassle at the end: Once the job is finished, the skip is collected and the waste is taken away.

What Exactly Goes in the Skip Bin? Here’s the Quick Version
Skip bins can swallow a surprising amount of household clutter, but they’re not quite a free-for-all. Before you start chucking everything in, run through this quick list so you know what belongs in the bin, what needs special handling and what might cost a little extra.
Do:
- Put general household rubbish, small appliances and kitchenware in the bin.
- Add garden waste such as leaves, grass, weeds and smaller branches.
- Dispose of unwanted clothes, bedding and other fabric items.
- Throw out old furniture such as couches, tables, cupboards and shelving.
- Add unwanted books, toys and other household clutter.
- Include general timber, offcuts and broken wooden items.
- Check with the provider if you’re unsure about a particular material.
- Donate or recycle usable clothes, toys, books and furniture where possible.
Don’t:
- Put hazardous materials such as paint, chemicals or batteries in without checking with your provider first.
- Throw glass, mirrors or large sheets of glass into a general skip without asking.
- Fill a standard skip with bricks, dirt, concrete, sand or large quantities of tiles.
- Assume plaster or plasterboard can go into a general-waste bin.
- Hide gas bottles underneath other rubbish.
- Add mattresses without checking for additional disposal charges.
- Put car tyres in without confirming the applicable fee.
- Mix heavy construction materials into a general-waste skip without discussing the right bin with the provider.
What are the Council Rules in the Eastern Suburbs?
Different councils have their own specific rules and processes. However, the general rule is that you will always need to inform the local council and obtain a permit.
Here’s a quick guide to the current rules in some of the local LGAs.
In the City of Booroondara, “you need a skip bin permit to place a skip bin on a road or Council-owned land.” This process includes applying for a permit. A permit is not required if the skip is being placed on a private property.
In the City of Knox, there are both annual and once-off permits. In the City of Whitehorse, “A Council permit is required for a skip bin company to place a skip bin, shipping container or similar waste container on Council land such as the nature strip, road, footpath, crossing or lane-way.”
One thing that will vary from council to council is the cost associated with applying for a permit, as well as daily fees. The best thing to do is to check these beforehand.
